An alarm sounded. Its screeching and dragged-out beeps felt like they were giving tiny lacerations to his ear drums and Sean quickly put his palms over them. Furious that the alarm had worked but not the doors, he kicked the cart and cursed. It was then he saw a tiny bit of movement in his peripheral vision.

Sean turned around, then released an incredulous gasp. The greeter, the kids, and the mom were out of sight, but they likely hadn’t moved. They were merely surrounded now by more of their kind.

The alarm must have woken them as they all stood near the exit Sean had just smashed through with a shopping cart. All the customers and coworkers he crossed to get there stood slack jawed and staring at Sean, not too interested, but interested enough to come see the commotion.

Abandoning covering his ears from the piercing alarm, Sean crawled between the door’s frame. Then he went to the next set of doors that led outside to a sunny day and a full parking lot. He knew they wouldn’t open, not with how everything had played out so far, but he still ran to the doors at top speed.

He stuck his fingers inside the crack where the two sliding doors met, and pulled apart. No progress was shown. Sweat dampened his forehead and dripped in his eyes.

Sean threw a gander behind him and saw all of the cold customers still on the other side of the door.

They looked emotionless staring into the glass, watching Sean spaz and run from side to side trying to find a way out. Sean, on the other hand, felt like an orangutang at the Topeka Zoo with all the eyes on him through a barrier. With no time to dwell, he returned his attention back to the door, but was taken back at the sight outside.
